Recycling the unwanted, a new life to sonic discard
- Malte Leander (Canadá)

In a continuously consumerist society, our wasteful living has catastrophic consequences on our surrounding environments. The same thing goes for sound in these spaces; our cities getting noisier and louder. But, just as we recycle our waste; the plastic bottles and empty containers – the same thing can be done with our sonic discard. New perspectives on previously labeled noise, unwanted, and unpleasant sounds, can lead to interesting results, both compositionally as well as philosophically. A shift of viewpoint, not fighting against the noise, but instead coming to terms with our ever changing society, will allow for a more sustainable way of working with, and around it – both on a social and communal level, as well as on a musical plane.

Malte Leander is a Swedish-French composer and artist currently residing in Tiohtià:ke/Montréal, Canada, studying at the program of Electroacoustic studies at Concordia University. He is actively engaged in a variety of contexts; from hosting and organizing different musical events such as live shows, workshops and music camps together with the electronic music collective and label So&Such in Sweden, to being a present figure in the Fine Arts community in Montreal, working in local community radio by facilitating discussions with local artists around the topics of digital practices and new media art and technology from the Montreal area. His multilingual skills and electroacoustic compositional endeavors has gotten him to work with text-sound composition and sound poetry, often mixed with his interest for sustainability through acoustic ecology and related topics.
