The instrumental sound of the clarinet dynamically interacts with electronics, video and body movement and lets the audience enter a manifold artistic vision of a landscape of the human soul. Both musicians share a desire for crossing frontiers: Szilard Benes is constantly seeking to extend the sonic possibilites of his instrument, being inspired by contemporary music, free jazz and also klezmer; Christof Ressi loves to design live-electronic setups and computer programs which allow him spontaneous and direct manipulation of sound and video. Together they are searching for new means of expression which they believe to find in the confrontation of different media, keeping a personal definition of music as open-minded as possible. The pieces are audio-visual concept improvisations focussing on various aspects and forms of musical interplay as well as interaction between different media like sound, image and movement. - Brenda Brown (Canadá) - Hearing the Wind
Conferencia - Día 4 < Back Brenda Brown (Canadá) - Hearing the Wind Conferencia - Día 4 Descripción | Abstract The video's subject is wind, in particular the wind in the landscapes of Chaco Culture Na6tional Historical Park in New Mexico, and how wind is seen in the people who live in the four corners region of the United States. Sound is a vital component of this portrayal. Brenda Brown (Canadá) Educated as both sculptor and landscape architect, Brenda Brown lives in Winnipeg, Canada, where she teaches Landscape Architecture and Environmental Design at the University of Manitoba. Brown creates “eco-revelatory design”, seeking to reveal landscape phenomena, processes and relationships, often considering how sounds can reveal landscapes and landscapes reveal sounds. Working in the US and Canada, she has created interpretive signage systems, listening trails, sound-video compositions and installations. In Michoacán, working with an ecologist, ornithologist and archaeologist, she designed a hummingbird habitat restoration for Tzintzuntzan along with an accompanying multi-media exhibition for Morelia’s MACAZ and the archaeological site itself. . She’s had residencies at the MacDowell Colony, Yaddo, Ucross, Chaco Culture National Historical Park, and Riding Mountain National Park as well as CMMAS.. Phoebe Scoutari, Kallirroi Vratti & Leona McDonough-Smith, The Maids (2021) “When slaves love one another, it’s not love” —Jean Genet This performance is an attempt to capture the abominable essence of Jean Genet’s play The Maids. It depicts the erotic sadomasochistic ritual game-playing between two maids, who fantasize about killing their mistress, whom it is their only role to serve. When she is absent, they get tangled into their own physical and psychological abusive role-playing game, leading progressively into the loss of their separate identities and their blending into one. Choreographer: Kallirroi Vratti Composer: Phoebe Scoutari Performers: Leona McDonough-Smith, Kallirroi Vratti Samuel Thomas, Grown in the Corner (2020) Pieced together by the human brain, we perceive a cohesive audio-visual world despite the flaws of the human eye and ear. Grown in the Corner embraces one such flaw. The lack of acuity in the periphery of vision is extended across the visual field and reflected in the sound. Mick Ryan, Lauren Harvey & Imogen Cavell-Wells, KINTSUGI 金継ぎ (2021) This piece explores the Japanese art form Kintsugi and depicts the deconstruction and reconstruction of a ceramic. Choreographically, it explores the aesthetic of shapes based on the physical characteristics and state of the ceramic; circular when whole and linear when fragmented. The accompanying music facilitates an imagery of the physical, textural and spatial characteristics from the formation, fragmenting and reforming of the ceramic into its new entirety. Gold resin amalgamating fragments is intrinsic to Kintsugi art and is envisioned by paint applied to the performers when representing the ceramic’s reformed state. Choreographers & performers: Lauren Harvey & Imogen Cavell-Wells Composer: Mick Ryan Videography: Lauren Harvey Wil Morrison, Performance Video (2020) 9’35 Solo performance using a DIY modular sound and visual system that uses hacked and repurposed obsolete video equipment alongside homemade synthesizer modules. - SPARC: We Invoke The Creatures Within The Wallpaper
A selected showcase of creative sound practice, multi-media installation and collaborative performance currently emanating from compositional research at City, University of London. < Back Ir al final | go to botom SPARC: We Invoke The Creatures Within The Wallpaper A selected showcase of creative sound practice, multi-media installation and collaborative performance currently emanating from compositional research at City, University of London. Wallpaper During isolation we have looked to the internet to replace in person communication. However, those who lack access to the internet are excluded from these virtual social spaces. Wallpaper utilises words from those isolating without access to the internet. In an online recording session, their words were read back, performed and manipulated via the imperfections of the internet until digital noise overtook all meaning. These recordings were then arranged to create Wallpaper. Wallpaper exists in two versions: the digital download and a hotline available on +44 330 818 0351. Performers: Patricia Auchterlonie, Mimi Doulton, Ella Taylor and Juliet Wallace. Supported by Sound and Music. The Creatures Within: An installation for the sound and light sculpture Hulda Hulda is an audio-visual sculpture created by Lilja María Ásmundsdóttir. During performances Hulda’s surroundings are filled with sounds, patterns, shadows and colours that constantly change. Inside the sculpture are built-in lights connected to a computer that analyses the sounds and transforms them into light. The strings of the sculpture can be adapted to different tunings. The Creatures Within shows different perspectives from an installation for the audio-visual sculpture Hulda. The sounds of Hulda merge together with electronics made from the sculpture itself, environmental sounds and voice. We Invoke The Black. To Rest A collaborative composition and performance with Enam Gbewonyo, in response to Lynette Yiadom-Boakye’s exhibit Fly In League With the Night. A co-composed work including interview and discussion with five Black British people, discussing how we rest. What rest feels like, and what a lullaby might be to us, now. As a performer in this composition, I consider my role to be one of vessel or vehicle. Rather than exploit the spotlight to centre my voice, narrative, and experience (solely), I make efforts to perform in a way to allow the stories and narratives of my co-composers to exist alongside and with equal importance Lilja María Ásmundsdóttir (Iceland) is an artist, composer and performer from Iceland. In her practice, she often explores improvisational creativity and collaborative methods, working with artists from different fields. Jonathan Higgins (UK) a composer and performer based in London whose music focuses on exploring how noise can be utilised as a transformative and generative tool. His music has been performed and prized both nationally and internationally. Liz Lassiter (USA) is a composer and vocalist writing genre-less compositions with Black Women for Black Women. Her practice is rooted in storytelling and the “viscerality” of the imaginary. Currently, she is a PhD student at City, University of London studying how ethnographic composition can best answer questions around the Black Woman immigrant/ex-pat/trans-national identity. The goal of these soundscape musical meditations is to interact and to be inspired by the sonic landscapes and interacting with different time levels while we travel inward finding a peaceful center for our wellbeing. Y así comienza (3:24) This was the first recording of an Audio Journal of remote layered recording in my old home in Mexico, reconnecting to past friends and memories and experiencing these places again through layered soundscape-meditations. It has also been a meditation on using the same instruments and key centers (based off of the handpan I brought). How do these sounds and themes evolve over the trip and with the interaction of places, friends, and feelings.....? Cable Beachin’ (15:28) ○ Recorded on the shore of Lake Siskouyou which is located at the base of Mt. Shasta in Northern California. This was a 4 layered recording where the wind picked up during the day and these sounds became a changing part of the improvisation. Listen how the sounds of the water flowing and lapping against the shore inspire this piece. Planta electrica - dos estrellas (8:20) his composition was recorded in layers in the old electric plant at Dos Estrellas Gold Mine in Tlalpujahua, MICH, Mexico on 6/17/2021. You can sense the rich history of the location of the varied uses of the building over time. In 1937 a mudslide buried 1⁄3 of the town in a mining accident. The mine was still used into the 1960’s. Exploring the different time levels and uses of this building by recording a 4 layered composition where each musician inhabited a different part of the ruin of a building and then bring them together by interacting sonically and musically from the different time levels. Flowing-Calming-Light (2:32) Recorded at the Headwaters of the Sacramento River in th Mt. Shasta, CA. This soundscape/sound meditation uses the changing sounds of how water travels from within the earth transforming into a mighty river. Soundscape Musicians: David Blink (EEUU)- Cornet/Trumpet, Gong, Handpan, Jarana & Percussion Also on planta electrica - dos estrellas Juan Alzate (Mex)- Soprano & Tenor Saxophone Monica Reina (Mex)- Percussion, & Singing Bowls Do you have comments or questions to the artist?
